Biographical Note

John Peter Paul was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania November 12, 1758. In 1778 he joined the George Rogers Clark expedition. In 1794 he married Sarah Thomberry Grover in Danville, Kentucky. He served as a colonel during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. He moved to Indiana in 1808 settling near what is today Madison, Indiana. He worked as a miller, businessman, farmer, surveyor, and publisher. He established the first ferry from Madison, Indiana to Kentucky in 1811. He was president of the Farmers’ and Mechanics’ Bank, clerk of Hardin County, Kentucky, Hamilton County, Ohio, and Jefferson County, Indiana. He was a member of the Ohio Constitutional Convention in 1808 and an Ohio State Senator. He was a member of the Indiana territorial legislature. He served in the Indiana State Senate.
