Biographical Note
John Patton was born in 1754 in Northern Ireland and arrived in America sometime before 1774. He married Martha Sharp in 1775 and they had eight children: Nathaniel, Martha, Thomas, Nathan, John, Jane, Mary, and Nancy. He was a farmer in Rockbridge County, Virginia and owned 278 acres of land. He opposed the institution of slavery and encouraged his children to move away from the slave state, which they did. First moving to Adams County, Ohio, a few of his offspring moved farther west, including Nathaniel who moved to Rush County, Indiana around 1824. Mr. Patton died in 1809.
