Biographical Note
David Maclean Parry was born March 26, 1852 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania to Thomas J. and Lydia (Maclean) Parry. The family moved to Indiana in 1853 and settled on a farm near Laurel in Franklin County. In 1882, he and his brother Thomas opened a buggy making business in Rushville called the C Spring Cart Company. The business relocated to Indianapolis in 1886 and operated as the Parry Manufacturing Company with David serving as president. Besides manufacturing carriages, farm implements, and road carts, David also ventured into the automobile industry and established the Parry Automobile Company in 1909. His tenure as president of the National Association of Manufacturers and his 1906 satirical book on socialism, The Scarlet Empire, gave him an anti-union reputation. He passed away at the age of 63 on May 12, 1915.
