Biographical Note
David Dale Owen was born June 24, 1807 at Braxfield House near New Lanark, Scotland to Robert and Anne Owen. His father was the social reformer who purchased the town of New Harmony, Indiana in 1825. David moved to New Harmony in 1828 and it remained his home for the rest of his life. In 1933 he began studying medicine at the Ohio Medical College in Cincinnati and graduated in 1836. Though he never practiced medicine, he became a renowned geologist and served as the state geologist for Indiana, Kentucky and Arkansas and preformed geological surveys for the federal government. He died on November 13, 1860.
