Arthur W. Osborn letter
Collection — Folder: S1712
Identifier: S1712
Scope and Contents
This collection includes a copy of a March 31, 1919 typewritten letter sent by Arthur W. Osborn of Spiceland, Indiana to Harlow Lindley, a librarian and history department head at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana and later sent to George S. Cottman, a noted Indiana historian. In the letter, Osborn mentions that he came across a reference in the book The Life and Letters of Captain John Brown regarding the burial of John Cook in Indiana after his execution for taking part in John Brown’s raid at Harpers Ferry in 1859. Though Indiana Governor Ashbel Willard, brother-in-law of Cook, was there for the burial, it should be noted that the book was incorrect; John Cook was buried in Williamsburg (Brooklyn), New York, not Williamsburg, Wayne County, Indiana.
