Scope and Contents

This collection contains historical writings related to Whitley County, Indiana, including a copy of "Seventy Years of Churubusco's History," a paper written by Mary Magers DeVault in 1932, with a sworn statement signed by Adele C. Misselhorn and notorized on October 1, 1937 attesting to the authorship of the paper and undated transcriptions of sections of historical passages about Whitley County and Chief Little Turtle taken from History of Whitley County, Indiana by Samuel P. Kaler and Richard H. Maring (1907) and Little Turtle: The Great Chief of the Miami Indian Nation by Calvin M. Young (1917).

This collection also contains two ribbon badges from the Whitley County Old Settlers Day held at Columbia City in 1936 and 1941 and three "wooden nickel" certificates created as souveniers for the August 1938 Whitley County centennial. Issued by the Whitley County Centennial Association, Inc., the wooden certificates were accepted at full face value in trade at any store in the county or redeemed in coin at local banks up to and including Tuesday, August 2, 1938.

Historical Note

Whitley County is located in northeast Indiana and was established in 1838. The county was named in honor of Colonel William Whitley, an officer with the Kentucky Mounted Infantry who was mortally wounded at the Battle of the Thames during the War of 1812. Columbia City, the county seat, was founded in 1839. Other towns in the county include Churubusco, Larwill and South Whitley.
