Scope and Contents

This collection contains photocopies of the records of School District No. 1, Township 26, N Range 12 East located in Bluffton, Wells County, Indiana. The records include meeting minutes from February 1844 to June 1851, lists of the number of children between the ages of 5 and 21 in the school district in 1844, 1849, 1850 and 1851, and a list of voters in the district in 1849. The record book was later used to record the sale of stamps, paper, and envelopes in October 1865.

Historical Note

Wells County, Indiana was established in 1837 and named for Captain William Wells, a scout for General Anthony Wayne. Bluffton, the county seat, was founded in 1838 and incorporated in 1851. Other communities in the county include Markle, Ossian, Poneto, Uniondale and Vera Cruz.
