Scope and Contents

This collection contains the Civil war diary of Ellis as well as a transcript of its contents. Also included are photocopies of some of his Civil war letters with transcripts, as well as photocopies of documents recording his service, an image of Ellis with his immediate family, and a brief biography of Ellis.

Biographical Note

James William Ellis was born in Mason, Kentucky to Robert and Lucinda (Cottey) Ellis on November 5, 1840. In 1854 the Ellis family moved to a farm in Hillsboro, Fountain County, Indiana. Soon after the move, Robert Ellis died leaving James and his mother to tend the farm. James W. Ellis enlisted as a private in the Union Army on August 2, 1862 in Newton, Fountain County, Indiana. He served in Company H of the 72nd Indiana Volunteers. In 1863 he became a member of Wilder’s Lightning Brigade. He was mustered out as a corporal on June 26, 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee. Ellis retuned to Indiana and married Sarah Ann Moore on August 12, 1866. They had three children, Alva, Ada, and Gertie. Ellis died on October 10, 1917 in Hillsboro.
