Scope and Contents

This collection contains photocopies of transcriptions of news items published in the Tipton Times from 1898 to 1899, including a letter to the editor from S. W. Nelson about the first businessmen of Tipton; letters from E. H. Phares, James W. Russell, Harry Hutchins, and a private who served with 160th Indiana Volunteers during the Spanish-American War; an article about two soldiers being “captured by Cupid”; and obituaries of George Vawter, Alexander Pennock, and Fletcher Tevis. Also included are photocopies of "Tipton County Stories of Yesterday and Today," a scrapbook containing stories written by school children and local residents for History Week at the Tipton Public Library April 16-23, 1923 and clippings of articles about Tipton’s historical events published in local newspapers in the summer of 1923.

This collection also includes typewritten transcriptions of two letters written by John B. Carrington, Jr. and sent to his father in Ripley County, Indiana during the time he was working in Tipton in August 1849. The letters were copied in 1921 by Lucy Elliott from the originals in the possession of Emma King Benham.

Historical Note

Tipton County, Indiana was created in 1844 and named for Gen. John Tipton, a veteran of the Battle of Tippecanoe and a United States senator from 1832 to 1839. The county seat was first named Canton but was changed to Tipton in 1848 to honor Gen. Tipton. Other communities in the county include Kempton, Sharpsville, and Windfall.
