Historical Note

Switzerland County is located in the southeastern corner of Indiana. Called "Little Switzerland" by early settlers, the county was organized in 1814. The early Swiss immigrants were drawn to the area by the supposed adaptability of the soil for growing grapes. Vevay, the county seat, was platted in 1813 and has the reputation of being the home of the first commercial winery in the United States.
