Scope and Contents

This collection includes the following items related to Sullivan County, Indiana: an April 10, 1892 letter stating that Mattie Tarwater was a member in good standing with the Church of Christ at Shaker Prairie; two copies of "The History of Alum Cave," a historical essay by Bess M. Smith of Coalmont, Indiana that was copied November 7, 1931; and a handwritten copy made in 1950 of Dr. H. N. Helms's family history from Dr. James B. Maple's book, A Medical History of Sullivan county, Indiana.

Historical Note

Sullivan County, Indiana was formed in 1817 and named for Daniel Sullivan, a Revolutionary War hero. The city of Sullivan serves as the county seat. For many years Sullivan County was one of the most important coal-producing areas in Indiana.
