Rush County School reorganization collection
Collection — Folder: S1690
Identifier: S1690
Scope and Contents
The collection includes three items: a copy of a one-page summary on the history of centralized township schools of Rush County, titled Centennial History of Rush County, edited by A.L. Gary and E.B. Thomas, Historical Publishing Company, Indianapolis, 1921. The document credits Washington Township Trustee William S. Hall of Rush County for being “the original promoter of consolidation of schools in Indiana”.
The collection also includes a copy of a two-page letter dated April 7, 1926 from L. A. Kalbach, Chief Clerk of the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Education, to Christopher B. Coleman, Director of Indiana Historical Bureau, regarding an inquiry about the first consolidated schools in the United States. In his response, Kalbach indicated that the Washington Township Schools of Rush County, Indiana, was among the earliest schools to consolidate in the United States, with its consolidation in 1877. Kalbach cites other states recording early consolidations, including Connecticut in 1839, Michigan in 1844, Ohio in 1846, and Massachusetts in 1869.
