Administrative History
The Service Club of Indianapolis was founded in 1920 by Howard C. Caldwell, Richard H. Habbe, John I. Kautz, Storey M. Larkin, Frank E. Long, Sidney S. Miller, and John Paul Ragsdale. There were 38 charter members and the basic requirement was that each member be a veteran of the U.S. Army, Navy, or Marine Corps during World War I. Its function was to serve veterans in various ways and not allow members to be in competing business enterprises. Later the membership requirements changed to include that each member be: 1) a citizen of the United States; and 2) a resident of Indianapolis or vicinity and that membership be capped at 175. In later years, service in any other military conflict to which the president or Congress had committed armed forces was accepted for membership. The organization has a website which was copyrighted in 2015.
