This collection includes two items: an original handwritten letter contained inside an envelope from Ratliff Boon, addressed to Indiana Governor James Ray on January 15, 1826, concerning arms for militia units at Bloomington and New Harmony, Indiana. Also included is a photocopy of the letter.

Biographical Note

Ratliff Boon served as the second Governor of Indiana, from September 12-December 5, 1822. Boon was born in Franklin County, North Carolina, on January 18, 1781, and moved with his family to Warren County, Kentucky, where he attended public school and learned the gunsmith trade. In 1801, Boon married Delilah Anderson, with whom he had seven children. In 1809, he moved to Indiana, and served in the Indiana Territorial militia in the War of 1812, rising to the rank of colonel. In 1813 Boon was appointed Warrick County Treasurer by Governor Thomas Posey. In 1819, Boon was elected Lt. Governor of Indiana, was re-elected in 1822, and upon the resignation of Governor Jonathan Jennings in 1822, became the seated Governor of Indiana until William Hendricks' inauguration. In 1824, Boon ran for U.S. Congress, and served from 1825-1827. After an unsuccessful re-election attempt in 1827, Boon was re-elected to Congress in 1828, and served from 1829-1839. In 1839, Boon moved to Louisiana, Missouri, where he again became involved in politics, but became ill and died on November 20, 1844.
