In 1813 Boon was appointed Warrick County Treasurer by Governor Thomas Posey. In 1819, Boon was elected Lt. In 1824, Boon ran for U.S. Congress, and served from 1825-1827. After an unsuccessful re-election attempt in 1827, Boon was re-elected to Congress in 1828, and served from 1829-1839.
