Scope and Contents

This collection contains three circa 1880-1889 trading cards from Westfield, Indiana businesses, including one from T.T. Bray, dealer in staples and fancy groceries, advertising Alden Fruit Vinegar; one from D.J. Mendenhall, druggist, advertising Stearns’ “Amorita” perfume; and another presented by D.J. Mendenhall and Company with an advertisement for Dr. D. Jayne’s Tonic Vermifuge. The collection also includes a dog tax tag from 1946 and a 1973 Hamilton County sesquicentennial medal.

Historical Note

Hamilton County, Indiana was established in 1823. Noblesville, the county seat, was platted the same year and is the oldest and most established community in the county. Westfield, located in Washington Township, was founded in 1834 by Quakers from North Carolina and served as an important home station to the Underground Railroad. Other cities and towns in the county include Arcadia, Atlanta, Carmel, Cicero, Fishers, and Sheridan.
