Scope and Contents

This collection includes two historical sketches regarding the Whitewater Canal Company building located in Connersville, Indiana. Both sketches were written in November 1938, with the first compiled from notes furnished by Mrs. Portia Vance Hanson and the second prepared by Caroline Dunn. A page from a periodical with an undated picture of "Elmhurst," a historic mansion in Connersville, is also included.

The Connersville, Indiana oversize collection (OBC237) is also part of this collection and consists of a page of advertisements for local businesses printed on light weight Asian tissue paper circa 1884 by Sink and Ochiltree of Connersville. The paper has Asian images and script, possibly Chinese, around all four edges and was printed with "Compliments of the Ladies of the Christian Church."

Main body text is in English, but there are Southeastern Asian characters forming a border, most likely Mandarin, Cantonese, or Japanese.

Historical Note

The city of Connersville is located along the Whitewater River in east-central Indiana and is one of the oldest cities in the Hoosier state. Founded in 1813 by John Conner, it is the county seat of Fayette County. The Canal House, located on East Fourth Street, was built around 1842 and served as the headquarters of the Whitewater Canal Company. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is owned and maintained by Historic Connersville, Inc.
