Scope and Contents
This collection contains a set of reports on various phases of DeKalb County, Indiana history completed in connection with an extension course in Indiana history from 1923 to 1924. Topics covered include Indian mounds and mastadon remains; the history of Huntertown, Auburn, Fairfield Township, Smithfield Township, Spencerville and Spencer Township; and the history of county newspapers, churches, public libraries, cemeteries, banking, and the medical profession. Various handwritten notes regarding tax lists, "firsts' in Spencerville, and other research topics are included with the reports.
This collection also has a Corunna Product Company stock certificate for one share purchased by John W. Mertz on October 25, 1918; two 1949 letters written by Howard H. Peckham, director of the Indiana Historical Bureau, and sent to Dr. W. W. Carey of Fort Wayne regarding the question of the year of settlement of Spencerville; and several cloth badges commercially printed for the Old Settlers' Day and Old Settlers' Reunions ranging from 1923 to 1941.

Historical Note
DeKalb County, Indiana was established in 1837 and was named for Baron DeKalb, a Revolutionary War hero. Auburn, the county seat, was founded in 1836 by Wesley Park. Other cities and towns include Altona, Ashley, Butler, Corunna, Garrett, Hamilton, St. Joe, Spencerville and Waterloo. The county has fifteen townships: Butler, Concord, Fairfield, Franklin, Grant, Jackson, Keyser, Newville, Richland, Smithfield, Spencer, Stafford, Troy, Union, and Wilmington.
