Scope and Contents

This collection contains the following documents related to Dearborn County, Indiana: the roll of Captain James McGuire’s company of volunteers from Dearborn County during the War of 1812; a newspaper clipping of the August 1839 general election results; Nelson F. Hood’s pardon and release for the crime of fornication, signed July 27, 1877 by Governor James D. Williams; remittance of a fine to Smith Fowler for the crime of fornication signed January 31, 1878 by Gov. Williams; a list of subscribers and the constitution of the Citizens’ Law and Order League dated August 21, 1884; a May 5, 1921 letter sent to the Indiana Historical Society for application of membership by P.J. Emmert; an eight-page copy of a history of John Ewbank typed from the original at the Indiana Historical Society on August 7, 1934 (page 7 is missing); a typewritten copy of a December 31, 1934 letter sent to Mrs. Gene Lawrence of Lebanon, Ind. from James H. Ewbank with information about the town of Lawrenceburg and the Lawrence family; a copy of the report, “History of City of Aurora, Indiana,” dated January 30, 1941; a March 21, 1948 letter sent to Miss Caroline Dunn of the William Henry Smith Memorial Library from H.F. (Herbert Frazer) Patton, historian of the Hamline Chapel Methodist Church of Lawrenceburg, regarding minutes of Methodist conferences; and an unused "Weekly Report" for conduct, recitations, minutes late, and absent with S.A. Buell, Teacher and "Lawrenceburgh, Ind." printed on it (undated).

Historical Note

Dearborn County was founded in 1803 and named for General Henry Dearborn, who served in the Revolutionary War and Was Secretary of War, 1801-1809.
