This collection includes correspondence, business, court, government and legal documents, and a typed copy of records of the Henry County Female Anti-Slavery Society ranging from 1830 to 1935 regarding deeds, invoices, titles, taxes, library books, and organizational business.

Administrative History

Henry County, Indiana was first settled by white men in 1819, with the first land sales recorded in 1821. The county was created out of Delaware County by the Indiana General Assembly, approved in 1821, effective June 1, 1822. It was a perfect square of twenty miles, according to the act creating it, but its boundaries have since changed.

Its current population is around 50,000 and the county seat is New Castle. New Castle is also home of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Museum and one of the largest high school basketball fieldhouses. Many major highways cross the county, including: Old National Road/ U.S. 40, Interstate 70, US Highway 36, State Road 38, and State Road 3, which linking Interstate 74.
