Biographical note

Indiana author Charles Major was born on Juy 25, 1856 in Indianapolis, the son of Stephen and Phoebe Gaskill Major. At thirteen, he moved with his family to Shelbyville, Indiana. He attended local schools and read law in his father's office before attending the University of Michigan Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1877. He practiced law in Shelbyville for a time, but following the success of his first novel, When Knighthood Was in Flower (1898), he devoted his time exclusively to his literary career. Mr. Major went on to publish several more novels before passing away at the age of 56 on February 13, 1913.
