Historical note
The Woman's Press Club of Indiana (WPCI) was founded on February 18, 1913 by 13 women who met for lunch at the Tea Room in the L.S. Ayres Department Store in downtown Indianapolis. The founding members were writers, editors, publishers and activists who saw a need for an organization to represent the interests of women working in the newspaper and publishing industries. The following month, 15 more women from around the state joined and Hester Alverson-Moffett, co-publisher with her husband of the Elwood Daily Record, served as the group's first president. After more than 100 years, the WPCI continues to welcome members working in all types of media and membership is also open to men.
