Scope and Contents
This collection contains a September 25, 1845 circular letter printed by the Wabash Academy of Science and committee members H.S. (Henry Smith) Lane, Elizur Deming, Israel Williams, and William Twining. Addressed to Jeremiah Hamell of Valparaiso, Indiana, the letter was sent to a gentlemen across Indiana as an invitation to be honorary members of the Academy’s committee to raise funds for the purchase of a telescope and other instruments for a proposed observatory to be established at Crawfordsville. The letter includes information regarding observatories that had recently been built in other parts of the country.

Historical note
The Wabash Academy of Science was established in 1844 for the purpose of promoting the study of the natural sciences and to preserve the historic incidents connected with early settlement and progress in the Wabash Valley in both population and improvement. Annual meetings of the Academy were held the Wednesday before the Wabash College commencement in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Founding members included Senator Henry S. Lane and William Twining, a Wabash College professor and abolishionist.
