Rufus Martin collection
Collection — Folder: S1633
Identifier: S1633
Scope and Contents
The collection is composed of three items, including a ribbon showing membership in the Melroy Local No. 145 of the International Brotherhood of Blacksmiths and Helpers, Indianapolis, Indiana. One side of the ribbon shows an anvil and hammer inside a circular mounting attached to a short ivory ribbon with two American flags across its width; both of these are attached to a clasp over which two hands are joined in a handshake. All of the decorations are displayed against the background of a larger ribbon with a field of stripes, red, white, and blue. The reverse side of the ribbon is an "In Memoriam" ribbon in black, against which the I.B.B.H. symbol and identification of the local chapter of the Brotherhood are repeated in silver.
Also in the collection is an envelope for the safe keeping of the ribbon with the manufacturer's name and address (The Whitehead and Hoag Company, Badges...Society Emblems...Newark, N.J.) printed on it. Included, too, is a scrap of paper, from the Deputy Auditor of State, dated October 24, 1888, which comments on an impending election, in part with the words "Hurrah for Harrison." This scrap of paper is the only dated item in the collection.
