Old Bachelors Club collection

 Collection — Folder: S1615
Identifier: S1615

Scope and Contents

The Old Bachelors Club was organized on May 1, 1858, by eight young men who vowed never to marry. The writer of these four pages of typed notes stated that "they all married and reared families." The notes mention various businesses in Muncie where the men lived and worked. Thomas Hickman Kirby has the longest biography. He fought in the Civil War, took a wind-jammer to California, and worked in the Comstock Lode Gold Mine. Back in Muncie, Mr. Kirby worked in his father's lumber business. Goldberry Maddy had a shoe business, and his brother William had a grocery store.
