Scope and Contents
This collection includes a number of receipts issued to the John S. Spann and Company from various Indianapolis service and supply companies ranging from 1880 to 1993. Also included are several receipts made out to H. J. Spann (1893 to 1894) and an Indiana Bicycle Company warranty certificate (circa 1890s).

Historical note
John S. Spann was born in 1823 in Jefferson County, Indiana. He moved to Indianapolis in 1839 and became an apprentice in the printing trade before entering into several newspaper ventures. In 1860, he began a successful career in the real estate, loan and fire insurance business. He went into partnership with Francis Smith in 1862, but the firm of Spann and Smith was dissolved after a few years and he continued under the business name John S. Spann and Company. Over the years, his partnered with his sons Thomas H., John M. and Henry J. and following his death in 1897, the company continued under the leadership of Thomas. John S. Spann and Company was incorporated in 1902 and was later known as the Spann Company.
