Scope and Contents
The collection include correspondence, clippings, lists, constitution, newsletters, press releases, programs, and other records from the Indiana Society for Mental Hygiene, ranging from 1916 to 1956, regarding the organization, its activities, and its annual conferences. The correspondence concerns communications from the society's secretaries regarding annual meetings and the re-organization of the society in 1940 (1916–1941), as well as with the Indiana Federation of Clubs and the Indiana State Library regarding the preparation of a package library of books on mental health (1935–1936). There are also addresses and research papers presented at several annual conferences (1920, 1932, 1940-1941) and shorthand notebooks of notes taken at the 1919 and 1920 conferences.

Administrative History
The Indiana Society for Mental Hygiene was founded in 1916 to promote education on mental disease and mental deficiency and to improve the care and treatment of the mentally ill and people with mental handicaps. The purposes of the organization, was “to work for the conservation of mental health; for the prevention of mental diseases and mental deficiency and for improvement in the care and treatment of those suffering from nervous or mental diseases or mental deficiency.” In 1952, the Society became the Indiana Association for Mental Health.
