Historical Note
Indiana became a state upon President James Madison signing the congressional resolution admitting Indiana into the Union on December 11, 1816. In 1916, Indiana celebrated its 100th anniversary, as local, county and state government bodies and organizations created pageants and other projects to document Hoosier history and commemorate the changes of the past century. For example, the Indiana Centennial Jubilee was held in Indianapolis during October 2-15, 1916.
The Indiana Historical Commission was formed on March 8, 1915 in anticipation of the state centennial the following year. The commission consisted of nine members led by Indiana Governor Samuel M. Ralston, including James A. Woodburn, Harlow Lindley, Charles W. Moore, Rev. John Cavanaugh, Frank R. Wynn, Samuel M. Foster, Lew M. O'Bannon, and Charity Dye. The commission's mandate was to collect, edit, and publish materials on Hoosier history and to prepare and execute plans for the state centennial in 1916. The commission still exists today in the form of the Indiana Historical Bureau.
