Biographical Note

Edward Willis Nicholson was born around 1828 in Kentucky. During the Civil War, he first entered military service as a private in the 11th Indiana Regiment and was promoted to sergeant in the 9th Battery of Indiana Volunteers. He achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant on December 15, 1862, and then transferred to the 22nd Indiana Battery. On July 5, 1864, he became a captain. Edward was mustered out of service on July 7, 1865, following the end of the Civil War. On November 1, 1865, he married Emily Ellen Meredith and they had a son and a daughter, (Willis) Meredith and Margaret E. Nicholson. Meredith Nicholson became a best-selling author and politician. Edward died on August 19, 1894 in Washington, D.C. Emily Nicholson died over two decades later on July 6, 1915.
