Historical note
Butler University is a private liberal arts school located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Founded in 1855 as North Western Christian University, it was the third university in the country to admit women on an equal basis with men. In 1877, the name of the school was changed to Butler University to honor Ovid Butler, a local attorney and abolitionist and one of the founders of the university. The university has occupied three campuses in and around Indianapolis, the first being on land donated by Butler and located at what is now 13th Street and College Avenue. In 1875, the school moved to property purchased in the town of Irvington approximately 5 miles east of downtown and then it was moved to its third and present campus located on more than 300 acres on the north side of the city in 1928.
