Scope and Contents

This collection includes a typewritten copy of the proposed by-laws of the Butler University Alumni Association that were approved by the Alumni Board of Directors in May 1980. According to a handwritten note on the first page, the by-laws were scheduled for ratification by alumni members at a special meeting of the board on September 13, 1980.

Historical note

Butler University is a private liberal arts school located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Founded in 1855 as North Western Christian University, it was the third university in the country to admit women on an equal basis with men. In 1877, the name of the school was changed to Butler University to honor Ovid Butler, a local attorney and abolitionist and the founder of the university.
