This collection includes a typed appeal from the women of the Elutherian Education Society in Lancaster, Indiana to the women of Indiana dated June 16, 1853 regarding the education of destitute children, particularly African Americans. The appeal, written for publication in the Indiana Free Democrat newspaper, includes the articles of the Elutherian Education Society.

Administrative History

The Elutherian Education Society, or Eleutherian Institute, was formed in 1848 in Lancaster, Jefferson County, Indiana, dedicated to the education of all regardless of race or gender. Through donations, a large stone building was constructed in 1856 and students were enrolled, including African Americans. Jefferson County housed one of the three major routes for slaves escaping north through Indiana.
