Historical Note

Wyandotte Cave was first discovered by American Indians and used as a quarry. In 1812, the cave was used for the manufacture of saltpeter. Estimates of its size vary widely, but it is at least 5 miles long. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1972 and is now owned by the state of Indiana.
