Administrative History
In September 1875, a meeting was called in the rooms of the State Geologist in the
Indiana Statehouse to form an archaeological association. Attendees were urged to
bring relics of prehistoric man to contribute towards the formation of a State
Archaeological Museum. At this meeting, the State Archeological Association of
Indiana was formed.
The mission of the State Archaeological Association of Indiana was to create a state
museum, to have an annual meeting, and present research findings. This association’s
idea of a State Archaeological Museum was the precursor to the Indiana State
Museum.
