Scope and Contents
This collection includes typed reports from the Indiana Legislative Bureau regarding standing rules and orders for the Indiana General Assembly. The collection also contains state and county finances, and two typed articles: "Titles of Acts and the Passage" and "Taking Effect of Acts and Joint Resolutions in Indiana." Other items include articles written by two directors, John A. Lapp and Charles Kettleborough; bibliographies, lists of laws by subject, lists of laws and amendments, appropriations, information about coal mining, overviews of Indiana, and miscellaneous ranging from 1833 to 1953.
The oversize collection contains the following items: "What is the Constitution of a State"; "What a Constitution May Not Contain"; "History of Indiana's Constitution"; 1917 (2 copies); "The Bill of Rights"; "Rights of Accused"; and "Suffrage", 1917 (2 copies); Criminal Identification Bureau documents, 1926; "Compensation and Basis of Factor" document, 1921; and "Constitutional Amendments Proposed and Adopted Since 1851" document, undated (OBC143).

Administrative History
The Indiana Legislative Bureau was first created in 1907 as the Legislative Reference Department in the Indiana State Library. The bureau was a division until 1939, when it became an independent agency. The purpose of the agency was to assist the Indiana General Assembly by providing members with impartial and accurate information and reports concerning the legislative issues being addressed.
