This collection includes photocopies of a typewritten draft of the biographical sketch of Dr. Herbert Milton Woollen created by the Citizens Historical Association and dated June 1934. Along with information about Dr. Woollen, the three page sketch also traces his family back several generations and has biographical information regarding a number of his ancestors, including Richard Woollen, Leonard Woollen, Milton Woollen, Sarah (Black) Woollen, Joshua Black, Milton Asbury and Ida (Baird) Woollen.

Biographical note

Herbert Milton Woollen was born on December 1, 1875 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Milton Asbury and Ida (Baird) Woollen. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Indiana in 1903 and did post-graduate work at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, the Polyclinic Institute of New York, and at Cornell University. In 1904, he began practicing medicine in Indianapolis and specialized in ear, nose and throat diseases. That same year, he also became the assistant medical director of the American Central Life Insurance Company of Indianapolis and later served as secretary and vice president before being elected president of the company in 1912. On January 7, 1907, he married Irma Wocher, the daughter of Julius and Helen Wocher. Dr. Woollen died at the age of 95 on October 19, 1971.
