Scope and Contents

This collection includes a July 2, 1863 letter written by Homer Woodworth and sent to his cousin Arvilla Reeves at Nettle Lake, Williams County, Ohio. Woodworth, a private in the 100th Indiana Regiment, wrote the letter while "encamped at Haines Bluffs on the Yazoo River about six miles from Vicksburg" during the siege of Vicksburg. He gave dates and some details regarding the regiment's travel from Collierville, Tennessee to Vicksburg and also mentioned that he'd been sick and wasn't with his regiment at the Big Black River.

Biographical note

Homer S. Woodworth was born on December 28, 1842 in Angola, Steuben County, Indiana to Augustus and Mary Woodworth. He mustered into Company B, 100th Indiana Regiment on August 15, 1862 and received an honorable discharge on September 3, 1863. As a boy, he traveled with a company of magicians. Following the war, he tried a number of trades, including watchmaker, photographer and pharmacist, but always returned to the road as a professional magician. He lived in Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming before moving to San Diego, California in the 1930s. When he died at the age of 98 on May 19, 1941, he was considered to be the oldest magician in America.
