Scope and Contents

This collection includes a June 30, 1839 letter sent by William and Lydia Wood from Pleasant Ridge, Ohio to Jacob and Polly St. John in Johnson County, Indiana. In the letter the Woods relate family news, farming prices and the progress of a turnpike being built to Montgomery, Ohio.

Biographical / Historical

William Wright Wood was born on February 14, 1813 in Hamilton County, Ohio to James and Charity Chandler Wood, early settlers of the village of Pleasant Ridge near Cincinnati. Lydia Hurin Marsh was born on January 12, 1817 and she married William on March 16, 1836. William was a farmer and lived on the family homestead until his death on September 27, 1875. Lydia passed away twenty years later on February 28, 1895. William’s older sister Polly Chandler (1794-1863) married Jacob St. John (1790-1845) in 1816 and they later settled in Johnson County, Indiana in 1837.
