Biographical Note

George Winter was born in Portsea, England on June 10, 1810. He attended the National Academy of Design for three years before immigrating to America in 1830. He settled in Logansport, Indiana in 1836. In 1840, he married Mary Squier and together they had two children. Winter worked as a portrait artist and is most noted for his paintings of early Indiana settlement and landscapes. George Winter died on February 1, 1876 in Lafayette, Indiana.
