Historical Note
James Franklin Doughty Lanier was a well-known and respected banker and financier who helped finance Indiana during the Civil War. Born in North Carolina in 1800, he and his family moved to Madison, Indiana in 1817. He began practicing law in 1823 and later entered into banking and finance in the 1830s, serving on the board of the State Bank of Indiana and as president of its Madison branch. In 1849, he partnered with Richard H. Winslow and formed the New York investment bank Winslow, Lanier and Company. At the outbreak of the war, Indiana was deeply in debt and Governor Oliver P. Morton made a personal appeal to Lanier for help. A staunch Union supporter, Lanier and his firm made unsecured loans of over $1 million dollars to Indiana to help outfit the troops and keep up interest payments on the state’s debt. Following the war, Indiana repaid the loans, with interest, by 1870.
