Scope and Contents
This collection includes a journal of Civil War reminiscences written by Louis W. Knobe in March of 1866, recounting battles fought by the 18th Indiana Infantry Regiment between 1861 and 1863, based on notes he wrote on the battlefield. The battles recounted in the volume include: Pea Ridge, March 6-8, 1862 (pages 24-27); Magnolia Hill, May 1, 1863 (pages 28-30); Champion Hill and Black River, May 16-17, 1863 (pages 31-32); Vicksburg, May 19-July 4, 1863 (pages 33-45); Jackson, Mississippi, July 10-17, 1863 (pages 46-54).
There is also a newspaper clipping from the Franklin Star dated January 10, 1914, with the headline: "Eighteenth Indiana Regiment Had Fourteen Pairs of Brothers," which includes Louis W. and Sebastian Knobe. Three hand-written notes accompany the clipping, the two dated 1924 listing dates and events of the 18th regiment, while the third notes the regiment's medical officers.

Biographical Note
Louis W. Knobe was born September 29, 1840, to Balzar and Magdaline Knobe, in Jennings County, Indiana. Serving as a 1st sergeant, he and his brother enlisted in Company I, 18th Indiana Volunteer Regiment, on August 16, 1861. On April 15, 1862, Knobe was promoted to 2nd lieutenant, and on March 14, 1863, to 1st lieutenant. Knobe mustered out on September 15, 1863. On March 10, 1864, he married Damaris C. Kimball. In 1880, they had three children: Chancey, Bertha, and Merle. Louis died on October 19, 1930, in Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana.
