Scope and Contents

This collection includes an August 24, 1927 typewritten letter written by Francis M. Wiley and sent in response to an inquiry printed in Kate Milner Rabb's Indianapolis Star newspaper column, "A Hoosier Listening Post." The information requested was in regards to spinning on the "big wheel" and Mr. Wiley shared some of his recollections of the process. His letter was printed in Rabb's column on August 30, 1936.

Biographical / Historical

Francis M. Wiley was born on December 9, 1851 in Johnson County, Indiana to Louis and Eleanor Wiley. He married Emma Keaton in 1879 and they had one son. The family lived in Indianapolis and for forty years he worked as a traveling salesman for the Moore Oil Company, later the Pure Oil Company. He wrote several articles regarding Indiana history for Indianapolis newspapers and also published religious and Biblical histories. He passed away at the age of 84 on April 3, 1936.
