Scope and Contents

This collection contains the typewritten acceptance speech that Lionel Wiggam gave at the Indiana Authors' Day in Bloomington, Indiana on April 8, 1962. Wiggam was given the award for most distinguished book of poetry by a Hoosier author published in 1961 for his book The Land of Unloving. His remarks during his speech were a tribute to the librarians who helped and guided him in his youth.

Biographical Note

Lionel Wiggam was born on September 16, 1914 in Columbus, Indiana to Howard and Pearl Wiggam. His family moved to Indianapolis when he was about six years old and he later graduated from Arsenal Technical High School. He attended Northwestern University and graduated from Princeton University in 1943. An award winning poet, playwright and fiction writer, he was also a top model for men's clothing. He had two books of poetry published, Landscapes with Figures (1936) andThe Land of Unloving (1960). He died in Ocean Grove, New Jersey on August 16, 2005.
