Scope and Contents

This collection includes items from Robert B. Whitsett in Logansport, Indiana, ranging from circa 1941-1944, regarding regarding the Potawatomi and Miami peoples near the Wabash and Eel River in Indiana, particularly their settlements and treaties with the United States. Items in the collection comprise a single-page, typed transcription listing the names of individual Wabash Potawatomi Indians and their English equivalents, as compiled from the lists of signers of agreements and treaties made between December 1 and December 20, 1834, by the Logansport Indian Agent, William Marshall; and, two copies of a 4-page letter written by R. B. Whitsett on January 9, 1941, to the director of the National Park Service regarding the historic Indian village of Eel River Town, Cass County, Indiana, which lies south of Logansport, Indiana. A photostat copy of an 1843 English-Potawatomi dictionary is also included within the collection. The dictionary is from the Bureau of American Ethnology.

Biographical Note

Robert B. Whitsett was born April 28, 1899 to Robert B. and Anna Whitsett in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana. A Logansport historian and author, Whitsett served as chair and secretary of the L’Anguille Valley Memorial Association in Logansport. His books include Pulaski County, Indiana Cemetery Records (1942-1947), and Legend of Cedar Isle (1936). Whitsett died February 17, 1993.
