Scope and Contents
This collection includes a photocopy of Lloyd A. Whitehead's typewritten essay "The Mastodon Who Went to College" (circa 1970). The essay discusses the chain of events that led to the discovery of an incomplete mastodon skeleton on the Bookout Farm in Randolph County, Indiana and how it was combined with other remains found previously at New Paris, Ohio and mounted together at Earlham College (Richmond, Indiana) in 1895. The mounted skeleton became known as the "Randolph Mastodon".

Biographical / Historical
Lloyd Alvan Whitehead was born on May 11, 1894 in Randolph County, Indiana to Wayne and Sarah Whitehead. He attended Muncie Normal Institute (now Ball State University) and was a building contractor for more than 30 years. He was also a published author, poet and lyricist and was named State Poet Laureate by the Indiana State Federation of Poetry Clubs in 1964. He married Alma Burroughs in 1916 and they had five children. A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he passed away at the age of 93 on September 23, 1987.
