Scope and Contents

This collection includes letters ranging from 1938 to 1939 and sent to Chaplain White from inmates and former inmates of the Indiana Reformatory at Pendleton. The letters express appreciation for the Bible and prayer classes, thank him for his advice, and for those on parole, they discuss how they are doing with work and family. Also included is a copy of a June 8, 1939 letter White sent to a former inmate and his chaplain's report covering his activities at the prison from July 1, 1939 to June 30, 1940.

Biographical / Historical

Thomas Robert White was born on July 27, 1869 in Athy, County Kildare, Ireland to Thomas and Jane White. In 1889, he came from Ireland to Canada to study at Knox College at the University of Toronto. He later attended the McCormick Theological Seminary at Chicago and became an ordained Presbyterian minister in 1896. He served pastorates in Illinois, Wisconsin and Bloomington, Indiana prior to becoming the minister at the Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis in 1920. In 1934, he became the chaplain of the Indiana State Reformatory at Pendleton and held this position until his retirement in 1946. He was a veteran, having served as captain under General John J. Pershing during the 1916 Mexican Border campaign and as a Red Cross chaplain in the battle of the Argonne Forest during World War I. He married Emily Andres in 1896 and they had four children. Following Emily's death in 1928, he was married a second time to Valette Miller. He passed away at the age of 103 on June 19, 1973.
