Biographical / Historical
The 1868 election was the first to be held following the end of the Civil War. Major issues during the election were Reconstruction of the South and suffrage for newly freed slaves. Ulysses S. Grant was the Republican candidate for president and Schuyler Colfax, a United States Representative from Indiana, was his running mate. New York former governor Horatio Seymour was the Democrat nominee and Frank P. Blair was his running mate. Grant won the election with 214 electoral votes to Seymour's 80. In Illinois, Republican John M. Palmer defeated Democrat John R. Eden for Governor.
