Scope and Contents

The collection consists of letters and personal papers of William Wharton while a student (1871-1877) at Indiana Asbury University, Greencastle, Indiana. Also included are letters from university students to his father, William Wharton (1816-1901), a retired farmer in Marion, Indiana, and an 1855 letter from Clark County.

Biographical Note

William Lemon Wharton was born June 10, 1851 in Grant County, Indiana, to William Sr. and Rachel (Graham) Wharton. He was a student at Indiana Asbury University (DePauw University), Greencastle, Indiana, 1871-1877, and attended medical school at Indiana University, 1880-1882. He married Alice A. Wharton, and was a practicing physician in Matthews (New Cumberland), Grant County, Indiana. Wharton died on June 2 1923, in Muncie, Indiana.
