Biographical Note
Richard T. Warthier served in Company C, 76th Indiana Volunteers, which was a 30-day unit raised to defend the state of Indiana against the invasion of John Hunt Morgan and his Confederate soldiers. According to W.H.H. Terrell's Report (Vol. 6, page 236), Richard T. Warthier was mustered in on July 19, 1862, and mustered out when his term expired. In this letter which Richard wrote to his sister, he mentioned two officers: Col. James C. Gavin, 7th Indiana, who was home in Greensburg at the time of Morgan's Raid, and 2nd Lt. John H. Braden. Both Col. Gavin and Col. John T. Wilder, 17th Indiana, raised the 76th Volunteers to serve for thirty days for the purpose of fighting the guerrilla raiders who had crossed the Ohio River. (See Terrell's Report, Vol. 3, page 11.) Richard wrote that Col. Gavin was wounded in the hand and Lt. Braden was killed. However, the 1900 census reports John H. Braden, who was born in 1836 and married in 1861, as being 63 years old and living with his family. Terrell's Report lists 2nd Lt. John H. Braden as mustered out.
