Scope and Contents
This collection contains the personal correspondence and papers of William Warren, Jr. and information regarding the 24th Indiana Regiment. Alvin P. Hovey wrote a report (4 typed pages) of the Battle of Champion Hill, which was "The Gateway of Vicksburg." Governor Conrad Baker signed the large certificate acknowledging that Will Warren Jr. of Vanderburgh County has been elected Treasurer, dated October 30, 1872. On November 2, 1878, William was elected Auditor, and Governor James D. Williams signed his certificate which has a red seal and an etching of five people representing the State of Indiana. Alvin Hovey wrote to William Warren in Evansville on Feb. 26, 1888, when Alvin was serviing in the U.S. House of Representives. This letter is about the pension system and the Service Pension Bill. He wrote: "I do not think the Democrats in the House will give us any chance to accomplish much this Session. They have a majority of 15, and are smothering all pension legislation."

Biographical Note
William Warren, Jr. was born in Indiana in May of 1843 to William and Sarah Warren. He served in the 24th Indiana Regiment during the Civil War and worked as treasurer and auditor of Vanderburgh County Indiana. He married Eliza and they had two children.
