Scope and Contents
This collection comprises a typed copy of the letter which Herschel Jasper Warner wrote to his little sister Cloe from "Camp near Nashville and the Insane Asylum 1862." He wrote: "we have just drawed five days racions of sugar and Chancy is dealing it out to his men." He told about picket duty. "I have never felt the lest bit afraid when I was on post, away off in wood. Did not know what moment there might [be] a reble slip up and lay we cold. We go from three to five miles from camp." He told Cloe that they have inspection every Sunday at nine o'clock unless they were on a march. His captain, Nelson Boydston, "always spoke well of my clothing because I had those nice red shirts and always had them clean." Herschel wrote: "Uncle Jacob is down to the river washing for him and Chancy. He came in the ranks day before yesterday. George Phillips is a gay old soldier. He is in Chancy's mess. The boys are all well and seems to be well satisfied."

Biographical Note
Herschel Jasper Warner was born July 10, 1844, to Thomas Kirby and Hester Ann (Benford) Warner, in North Webster, Indiana He had at least two siblings, brother James H. and sister Cloe. On August 15, 1862, Herschel enlisted in Company B, 30th Regiment Indiana Volunteers, with Captain N. N. Boydston, at Fort Wayne. He died in Hospital No. 4 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, at 2:05 a.m. on March 3, 1863. Herschel's age was 18 years, 7 months, and 16 days. Buried on the day he died, his body was removed on April 3rd and transported back to Indiana where he was buried with military honors in North Webster on April 10, 1863.
